Inside the box

One of the highest exposures a health worker has is during intubation. While putting a patient on a ventilator, the pressurized air nebulizes saliva and phlegm aimed directly at the operator’s face. In Taiwan, Dr. Lai Hsien-yung improvised an “aerosol box”, a rigid acrylic box with two holes for hands to make a physical barrier between patient and health worker. Photos spread across the internet and demand peaked, but there are important improvements that need to be made on the original design.
