10,000 Gowns to Houston

In case you were wondering, this is what it looks like to ship 10,000 impermeable gowns to a Covid-19 hotspot. These 10,000 gowns are bound for Houston, TX. Needs assessed by GetUsPPE, funded by Boston Scientific, gowns cut and palleted by Kirin Cutting, produced by Something Labs, and shipped by Amazon!

When Boston Scientific originally made 1 million face masks, they partnered up with GetUsPPE for distribution based on need and with Amazon to help with the larger shipments. Now we’re using those contacts for gown distribution.

Amazon has the operational capacity to ship pallets of gowns to any regional hub in the country, and then they can be broken up to go to multiple sites within a 100 mile range of that hub, so they’ve become an incredibly useful partner, helping us expand our reach beyond the bounds of our volunteer drivers.

Something Labs used the GetUsPPE dataset to identify regions with high need and then connected with hospitals within those regions to prioritize distribution. Our partners at Kirin Cutting cut the material and palleted the gowns for us.

With the power of all these organizations, this week we shipped 10,000 impermeable gowns to Houston. The gowns were manufactured last week, palletted on Monday and shipped on Tuesday. They should arrive in Houston today (Thursday) and be broken up for delivery to each location before the end of the week.

Next up will be 10,000 to New Orleans, and then the week after to LA.
